Planting the Garden

The day we hoe the weeds out and plant is always so exciting for me! I love the smell of the dirt and all of the hope that goes into each little plant as I drop it into the ground and cover it with the soil. The last two summers have been gardening disasters. It was just unrealistic to keep up with weeding while Dane was running all over the woods and ceasing to nap in the afternoon. So all of the work and sweat equity of May was a waste. But this year he is quite the little helper with his very own real hoe and toy wheel barrel!

So this afternoon among the lovely scents of the hydrangeas blooming and rhubarb baking in the oven, we got to work. And once again, I am full of determination to weed, water, and freeze my way into healthy eating all winter long. Thank you to Rachel for hooking me up with all of the plants, Gretchen for inspiration and loaning me the gardening books, and Steve for building me my raised garden bed for Mother's Day!

The first harvest of spring: scallions and rhubarb. Nothing feels more satisfying that serving what you grew yourself for dinner.

The blossoms on the blueberry bushes are beginning to turn into berries!


Dane was actually more interested in finding worms than weeding.
