Tweeting, Climbing, & Swimming

The weather was sunny and warm yesterday so we headed outside in the morning to explore all the changes in our woods with the new spring season. Dane has started to notice nests in the trees so we walked around the oaks and the pines searching for birds' nests and squirrels' nests. We saw a lot of new baby birds and had fun "tweeting" back to them. The nest on our patio is still intact and Daddy said he saw a bird laying eggs there so Dane and I are waiting for the new baby birds to be born. His frustration level is growing over still not being able to climb that tree by himself. But his determination has diminished and he keeps trying!

Right after I took the shot of him smelling the purple wildflowers, the moment we had tried to keep from happening did and he fell into the pond. It was too close and I shouldn't have been so risky just for a picture. I snatched him out of there and he was breathing fine without a scratch on him. He fussed for a moment but I think that's because I was in hysterics. He didn't even cough, which Grandma Miller pointed out, meant that he knew to hold his breath. Thank goodness for three months of swim lessons! As soon as he was toweled off and in dry clothes, a phone call was placed to Daddy offering the choice of filling in or fencing of the pond to be made this weekend.

I was hoping not to completely get ride of the pond because there are goldfish in there that spawn (is that the correct term for goldfish??) every spring bringing dozens of new baby fish, the frogs, etc. If we can get through these couple of years, I felt there was a lot of educational benefit to having it for Dane. We are discussing the long term plan but it was definitely as warning to do something with it.
Please don't get the impression he is playing near or around the pond on a regular basis, it has been a safety concern of ours since we bought the house. For the record: Dane is NEVER outside by himself, he is NOT allowed to step onto the 18" rock border surrounding the pond, and we are ONLY around the pond to say "hi" to the fish and the frogs on our way in from playing. We keep him AWAY from it as much as possible. (The previous statement was mainly for the benefit of a certain Grandmother who has been waiting to say, "I told you this would happen")
